HealthTech overview
The HealthTech sector is rapidly evolving and filled with a multitude of stakeholders which makes it a very exciting space to be involved in but also leads to confusion when defining it.
We are often asked “What is it for?” and “What is HealthTech?”, so let us start with…
“What is HealthTech for?”
We believe that the purpose of the HealthTech sector is best understood when broken down into 4 core public health domains.
Health domains covered by HealthTech
Physical Health
Physical health promotes the normal functioning of the human body. But what is “normal”? This means that the biological processes necessary to ensure individual survival and reproduction are functioning and that a dynamic balance exists between the body’s functions (sleeping well, eating well, being physically active, having good hygiene, and getting enough relaxation) and the environment (social activities, school, work, travel, events, culture). Physical health issues are treated via healthcare – this is currently where the most advanced HealthTech measures and inventions are focused.
Environmental Health
Environmental health is the branch of public health that focuses on the relationships between people and their environment. The central aim of this domain is to promote human health and well-being and foster healthy and safe communities and is critically important in upholding the other three domains.
At Thaumatec, our work within this domain primarily focuses on the implementation of the European Green Deal.
Social Health
The goal of social health is for individuals to be happy, empathetic, and have a sense of belonging in their community. Social health is heavily influenced by social ties which are built over the course of a lifetime. Relevant areas of focus include relationships with family, experiences in the education system, work, hobbies, personal safety, etc.
Mental Health
The mental health branch promotes emotional and psychological wellbeing. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Even very young children may show early warning signs of mental health concerns. These mental health problems are often clinically diagnosable, and can be a product of the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors.
Main health sub-areas:
